What do the names of signs of the zodiac mean?
The names of the signs of the zodiac come from the names of the constellations given to them by the Sumerians 3–4 thousand years ago. There were more than 12. Some, such as the Pleiades and the Great Swallow, are now part of other, larger constellations. Babylonian astronomers around 500 B.C. came up with the idea of dividing the ecliptic into twelve equal parts. Some particularly large constellations had to be "trimmed" for this - and so some of the constellations of Scorpio became Libra.
The changes were reluctant, even Claudius Ptolemy of Alexandria, an astronomer, and geographer who lived in the 2nd century CE, called Libra Pincers, treating it as a fragment of Scorpio, and after his example, Nicolaus Copernicus did it 1400 years later. Currently, due to the precession of the Earth, the position of the constellations in relation to it has changed about 30 degrees (precession is from Latin praecessio - preceding, means a slow change in the direction of the Earth's spinning axis, caused by its uneven attraction by the Sun and the Moon).
Only for 49 days a year, the Sun is actually in those zodiac signs in which it should be according to the astrological "timetable", and for almost 3 weeks (from November 30 to December 17) it is in the constellation of Ophiuchus, i.e. beyond the traditional zodiac.
The signs of the Zodiac are a family of twelve constellations located in the ecliptic belt, i.e. a great circle on the celestial sphere. Throughout the year, the center of the Sun moves around the wheel and remains in each of the constellations of the Zodiac for about a month. Many people, married or single women believe that the sign we were born under has an impact on our lives.
A brief history of the origins of the signs of the zodiac
The ecliptic was divided into twelve parts by the Babylonians around 500 B.C.E., while the names of the constellations themselves are much older. They were given by the Sumerians several thousand years ago. The very word "zodiac" comes from Greek and means "animal", although as many as five signs did not take their name from animals.
Already in ancient times, people tried to guess what influence the stars had on the fate of the whole world and every human being. It was believed that the movement of the stars and planets was guided by gods, and people's lives were shaped by a given constellation of the Zodiac that was visible on their birthday. In ancient cultures, astrological predictions were common, especially among the rulers of states. Today, the signs of the Zodiac are the basis for creating horoscopes. Some believe that the dates of each sign should be updated as the position of the Earth has changed over the centuries. There was also another sign in the Zodiac between Scorpio and Sagittarius - Ophiuchus.
Characteristics of characters
The signs of the zodiac were then divided into different groups, e.g. male (positive) and female (negative).
They are also assigned to the four elements. Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are fire signs and it is believed that those born during this time are cheerful, intelligent, and sociable. Earth signs include Virgo, Capricorn man, and Taurus. They are conservative in views, practical, stubborn, and care about material security. Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are air signs, and according to the horoscope, people born under these signs are energetic, inquisitive, and inventive. The element of water is attributed to Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. People under these signs are sensitive, secretive, and have a strong intuition.
There is also a division of signs into three qualities: constant, variable, and cardinal. Constant signs (Taurus, Scorpio, Leo, Aquarius) are persistent, calm, and organized. Changeable characters (Virgo, Sagittarius, Gemini, Pisces) change the world through their actions, so that order and wisdom reign. For cardinal signs (Aries, Libra, Cancer, Capricorn), the most important are the mind and the head.
Also, the characters in the opposite circle are related. Such people attract and repel each other. The astrological epochs, also called eras in the history of mankind, which change every 2150 years, are also called the signs of the Zodiac. We have lived in the Age of Pisces for the last two thousand years, and now humans are entering the Age of Aquarius, which is to be characterized by spiritual development, the awakening of consciousness, and mercy.
As you can see, the constellations have fascinated mankind for centuries and were used not only for navigation for travelers. The zodiac answered many questions about humanity, spoke about the character of each person and his destiny, and was also used to predict the future.
Which zodiac are suitable to each other?
Zodiacal alignment is a theory in astrology that we have a strong bond with certain signs from our first encounter. Most often this happens with signs belonging to the same element or opposite to the zodiac wheel. Which zodiac match? Each sign of the zodiac has specific predispositions, but also limitations. Knowing what sign of the zodiac is assigned to a specific sphere of our life, it’s possible to analyze which features in a given area we should develop to be successful, and which we should work on. It goes without saying that Sagittarius and Leo are the most common pair of best friends. In turn, when Sagittarius meets Gemini, they will surely be united by a passionate romance. Of the less obvious ones, Capricorn and Scorpio make an incredibly good combination.
